Elasticsearch Strengthens Its Log Management Product Offering By Hiring Jordan Sissel, Creator of Logstash

Elasticsearch Delivers Powerful Combination of Open Source Search, Analytics and Log Management

Los Altos, Calif. and Amsterdam, The NetherlandsAugust 27, 2013 –

Elasticsearch, the company behind the popular real-time search and analytics open source project, today announced that Jordan Sissel, the creator of Logstash, the world's most popular open source log and event management technology, has joined the company. In his new role, Sissel will continue to drive the development of Logstash, while tightly integrating it with Elasticsearch and Kibana, the company's analytic visualization tool, to deliver a breakthrough open source log management solution. As part of the announcement, Elasticsearch is providing ongoing subscription support and training for Logstash, effective immediately.

The combined Elasticsearch/Logstash/Kibana solution has become the de facto open source standard for log and event management and is currently used by thousands of organizations ranging from global Fortune 100 enterprises to innovative startups. Logstash users typically extract logs and other event data from their systems, then store, search and analyze it in Elasticsearch, and visualize the results using Kibana.

Elasticsearch was built from the ground up to explore and analyze any type of data. The ability to slice and dice the data based on any aspect of it, combined with the ability to aggregate the results, has enabled users to explore the data in ways they couldn’t before, all in real time.

In the logging world, the definition of a log has expanded beyond just an error log to any piece of data associated with a timestamp. Logs now include access logs, application logs, and even a tweet, financial transaction, or an audit event. Logstash was built exactly with that concept in mind. It is a generic system to process events, with the ability to easily compose different ways to input, process, and output data. The plethora of inputs, filters, and outputs, as well as the amazing community that has developed around them, makes Logstash a Swiss Army Knife into almost any type of data munging.

By using this powerful combination of Elasticsearch products, companies are able to derive context between their various data types. Today, users are pushing data into Elasticsearch that includes traditional logs as well as other types of data. They are then able to use Elasticsearch to connect those different data types resulting in an almost serendipitous experience with their data.

"I designed Logstash from day one to work with Elasticsearch and Kibana, and joining Elasticsearch co-founders Shay Banon and Steven Schuurman and their incredible team is the perfect next step for Logstash, our community, and our users," said Sissel. "The new features and capabilities in Logstash version 1.2, which was released today, represent just the tip of iceberg for where we can take log management. Our pace of innovation is only going to accelerate."

"Elasticsearch customers already view Logstash and log management as a seamless extension of our core search and analytics product," says Shay Banon, creator and co-founder of Elasticsearch. "Bringing Jordan Sissel and Logstash development into our company will empower us to solve the most data intensive log and event management challenges."

Jordan established Logstash as an open source project in 2009. He previously worked at a variety of companies including Heroku, Loggly and Google.
