AI has lowered the barrier for fraudsters to scale attacks, automate operations, and evade detection. Moving at unparalleled speed, these AI-driven campaigns coordinate fraud that appears believable to human targets, while seamlessly blending into normal network traffic. The threat landscape has fundamentally changed.
Designed to evade traditional fraud defenses, many AI threats mimic legitimate customer behavior patterns and are often trained on open banking application programming interfaces (APIs). As a result, financial services companies face higher losses and investigation fatigue — increasing pressure on already overextended security analysts.
Why traditional fraud detection fails
Digital transformation has dramatically expanded the attack surface across online banking, mobile payments, ecommerce, APIs, and embedded financial ecosystems. What is agentic AI?

In other words, agentic AI acts autonomously by triggering workflows in pursuit of its objectives, but always under human supervision.
How agentic AI differs from traditional ML models
Traditional machine learning (ML) models are the analytical engines that underpin agentic AI systems. By learning statistical relationships between data points, they identify patterns that enable prediction, classification, and recommendation tasks. And as models are exposed to new and relevant data, they can refine their performance and improve accuracy over time.
In financial services, ML is most commonly applied to anomaly detection: identifying transactions, accounts, or behaviors that deviate from expected patterns.
However, ML outputs are typically narrow and task-specific, such as generating a fraud risk score or flagging anomalous activity. While ML models are the foundation of agentic AI, they are not autonomous. They require human-defined workflows to operate within predefined processes.
Agentic AI goes a step further. It uses ML outputs as inputs for a broader reasoning process and then determines which actions to take in pursuit of a defined goal. In short, ML predicts. Agentic AI interprets, decides, and acts toward a defined objective, without being limited to a single predefined path.
Agentic AI vs. static automation
Many organizations already use automation in fraud operations. When your card gets declined for an unusually large purchase or because you’re in a different country, that’s static automation at work. This type of automation follows predefined, deterministic logic. If A occurs, execute B.
Agentic AI is different because it is not limited to fixed rule-based decision logic. It can evaluate a broader context and dynamically adapt its actions. Instead of following a rigid path, it can determine:
- Which signals are most relevant
- Whether more information is needed
- Which workflow to initiate
- When to escalate to a person
While static automation executes instructions, agentic systems interpret evolving context before executing instructions.
What agentic AI is not
Agentic AI can be hard to define. However, it is important to note that agentic AI is not synonymous with fully autonomous, unsupervised decision-making. It is not a system that operates without oversight and does not (and should not) replace human expertise.
