Frequently Asked Questions
Can I try the Elasticsearch Service on Elastic Cloud for free?
Yes, you can sign up for a 14-day free trial. The trial starts the moment you create a cluster.
During the free trial period, you get access to provision a cluster with 4 GB memory (typical trial configuration), 96 GB storage, and high availability (HA) across two zones, at no cost. Your free trial also includes security for Elasticsearch and Kibana, which provides basic authentication, encryption, and role-based access control. You also get a chance to explore alerting (via Watcher), monitoring (formerly Marvel), reporting, and Graph.
If you have any technical questions, please contact us and get answers from the experts in the community, including people from Elastic.
If I need to change the size of my Elasticsearch cluster at a later time, what do I do then?
You can scale your clusters both up and down from the user console, whenever you like. The resizing of the cluster is transparently done in the background, without any downtime. Beware, however, that if you scale your cluster down, you must ensure that the downsized cluster can handle your Elasticsearch memory requirements.
Do you offer support subscriptions?
Yes, Elastic Cloud Standard, Gold, and Platinum includes a support subscription. In addition to all the features you get with our standard Elastic Cloud offering, you get access to support from the very creators of Elasticsearch and our commercial plugins for security, alerting, monitoring, reporting, and graph exploration. For a price quote, please contact us.
Where are Elastic Cloud's Elasticsearch clusters hosted and located?
We host our Elasticsearch clusters on Amazon EC2 and GCP. We have data centers in these regions:
- AWS: US East (N. Virginia), US West-1 (N. California), US West-2 (Oregon), Europe (Ireland), Europe (Frankfurt), Asia Pacific (Tokyo), Asia Pacific (Singapore), Asia Pacific (Sydney), South America East (Sao Paulo)
- GCP: us-west1 (Oregon), us-central1 (Iowa), europe-west1 (Belgium), europe-west3 (Frankfurt)
Can I use Elastic Cloud from outside of AWS or GCP?
Yes, you can connect to an Elastic Cloud cluster from anywhere that has access to the internet, specifically other cloud providers or an on-premise environment.
What is the difference between the Elasticsearch Service on Elastic Cloud and the Amazon Elasticsearch Service?
Elastic's Elasticsearch Service is the only hosted and managed Elasticsearch service built, managed, and supported by the company behind Elasticsearch, Kibana, Beats, and Logstash. (We elaborate on it in this blog.) We work hard to provide you with the latest versions of the software. Our service is built on best practices and years of experience hosting and managing thousands of Elasticsearch clusters in the cloud and on premise. We support custom scripts and dictionaries, and our Elastic Cloud Gold and Platinum customers can upload and run custom plugins with the service. We are the only Elasticsearch as a service offering where you get access to our commercial features and plugins.
In addition, Elastic Cloud is available on GCP as well as AWS, which gives more flexibility to users with regards to their deployment location.
Please note that there is no formal partnership between Elastic and Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Elastic does not provide any support on the AWS Elasticsearch Service.
Is the Elasticsearch Service on Elastic Cloud available for purchase via the AWS SaaS Marketplace?
AWS has recently announced the availability of its SaaS Marketplace. This allows SaaS vendors to bill the customers directly through their AWS account, with the the customers having to set up a separate billing relationship with the SaaS vendor. Elastic Cloud supports this option, and it’s now possible for existing AWS users to subscribe to Elastic Cloud via the the Elasticsearch Service on Elastic Cloud AWS marketplace listing. Simply click the “Continue” button on that page and follow the on-screen directions. Once the subscription is approved by you, you will be routed to the Elastic Cloud welcome page where you will be able to create clusters and use them just like directly-billed Elastic Cloud subscribers. All usage charges will be billed directly to the your AWS account. This option is good for users who wish to have a single point of billing for their SaaS services, or users who cannot establish direct billing relationship with Elastic.
Is the free Elasticsearch Service on Elastic Cloud trial available on the AWS Marketplace?
No, the free trial is only available through our website. You can sign up for a 14-day trial, no credit card required. From there, you can deploy on AWS or the Google Cloud Platform with full access to many hosted Elasticsearch features.
Do you offer Elastic's commercial products?
Yes, all Elasticsearch Service on Elastic Cloud customers get access to basic authentication, encryption and role-based access control, in addition to monitoring capability.
Elastic Cloud Gold and Platinum customers get complete access to all the capabilities in X-Pack:
- Graph Analysis & Visualization
Contact us to learn more.
As a special gesture to startups and small businesses running the Elasticsearch Service on Elastic Cloud, X-Pack, which includes features such as security (formerly Shield), alerting (via Watcher), monitoring (formerly Marvel), reporting, and Graph, is available at no additional cost to customers running clusters up to 64 GB memory. (Please note that the number of clusters and data centers add to the total amount of memory.)
Is my Elasticsearch Service on Elastic Cloud cluster protected by X-Pack?
Yes, X-Pack security features give you the full power to protect your Elastic Cloud cluster with basic authentication, encryption, and role-based access control.
Is there a limit on the number of documents or indexes I can have in my cluster?
No. We do not enforce any artificial limit on the number of indexes or documents you can store in your cluster.
That said, there is a limit to how many indexes Elasticsearch can cope with. Every shard of every index is a separate Lucene index, which in turn comprises several files. A process cannot have an unlimited number of open files. Also, every shard has its associated control structures in memory. So, while we will let you make as many indexes as you want, there are limiting factors. Our larger plans provide your processes with more dedicated memory and CPU-shares, so they are capable of handling more indexes. The number of indexes or documents you can fit in a given plan therefore depends on their structure and use.
