Today we are pleased to announce the release of Kibana 4.5.0.

<p>Welp folks, the release bonanza has begun and with it comes Kibana 4.5.0.<br></p><p>If you're ready to jump in, or just plain impatient, it's already available on <a href="https://www.elastic.co/cloud">Elastic Cloud</a>&nbsp;along with the latest releases for Elasticsearch, Logstash, and Beats. You can also download Kibana from our <a href="https://www.elastic.co/downloads/kibana">downloads</a>&nbsp;page.
</p><p>As you have probably come to expect, Kibana 4.5.0 has been upgraded to take advantage of the latest features in Elasticsearch and therefore requires&nbsp;at least <strong>Elasticsearch version&nbsp;</strong><strong>2.3.0</strong>.&nbsp;Below&nbsp;are some of the other changes&nbsp;you'll find in Kibana 4.5.0. It's a smaller release, as we have been working hard to get Kibana 5.0 ready. Expect more on that soon!

</ul><h1>Bug Fixes</h1><p>In <a href="https://github.com/elastic/kibana/pull/5908">#5908</a>&nbsp;we fixed a bug where pre-flight requests that failed would cause a full-screen "fatal" error. These requests happen just before Kibana sends queries to Elasticsearch in order to find out which indices should be searched, but were not using the same error handling logic as the actual search request. When a search fails it just shows an error at the top of the page with a dismiss button, and now eventually disappears. Now, errors that occur in these pre-flight requests will exhibit the same behavior.
</p><p>Another bug was caused by legend values that had funky characters. These values were being used to generate element selectors and were not being properly escaped before doing so. This meant that simply moving your mouse over the legend could sometimes result in the not-so-lovely "fatal" error screen. That was fixed in&nbsp;<a href="https://github.com/elastic/kibana/pull/6228">#6228</a>.
</p><p>Some other bugs that we squashed:

	<li>Properly highlight sections of area charts in "overlap" mode -&nbsp;<a href="https://github.com/elastic/kibana/pull/6471">#6471</a></li>
	<li>Use random colors if we happen to run out of colors in the palette - <a href="https://github.com/elastic/kibana/pull/5805">#5805</a></li>
	<li>Respect the configured timeouts for all communication with elasticsearch - <a href="https://github.com/elastic/kibana/pull/6341">#6341</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://github.com/elastic/kibana/pull/6377">#6377</a></li>
	<li>Fix the way that intensity is calculated in the heatmap - <a href="https://github.com/elastic/kibana/pull/5236">#5236</a></li>
	<li>Make the URL shortener work with installations using the base path configuration - <a href="https://github.com/elastic/kibana/pull/6353">#6353</a></li>
	<li>Fix several minor usability issues - <a href="https://github.com/elastic/kibana/pull/6049">#6049</a>, <a href="https://github.com/elastic/kibana/pull/5971">#5971</a>, <a href="https://github.com/elastic/kibana/pull/6306">#6306</a>, <a href="https://github.com/elastic/kibana/pull/6410">#6410</a>, <a href="https://github.com/elastic/kibana/pull/6374">#6374</a>, <a href="https://github.com/elastic/kibana/pull/5942">#5942</a></li>

Announcing the Kibana 4.2 Beta 1 release, with support for the first Elasticsearch 2.0 beta along with a handful of features and bug fixes.

<p>Have you been trying out the brand new&nbsp;<a href="https://www.elastic.co/blog/elasticsearch-2-0-0-beta1-released">Elasticsearch 2.0.0-beta1</a>? Do you want to use Kibana with your test installation? Well, have I got news for you!&nbsp;Today we're releasing a beta for your beta,&nbsp;Kibana 4.2.0-beta1.</p><p>This release offers&nbsp;support for the first Elasticsearch 2.0 beta along with&nbsp;a&nbsp;handful of features and&nbsp;bug fixes.&nbsp;If you are too excited to stick around, go right ahead and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.elastic.co/downloads/kibana">download Kibana 4.2.0-beta1</a>. If you are interested in what you are downloading however,&nbsp;lets take a look at&nbsp;some of the new features.</p><h2>Persistent Colors</h2><p>Starting in the 4.2 beta, generated colors are bound to the data they represent.&nbsp;This means that you no longer have to worry about the same color meaning multiple things on a single dashboard, hooray!&nbsp;— Thanks&nbsp;<a href="https://github.com/elastic/kibana/pull/4429">@gauravsinghania</a>!</p><p><img src="https://api.contentstack.io/v2/assets/575e4cabd8edd48f769362c9/download?uid=blt0fb1e81ff421bed9?uid=blt0fb1e81ff421bed9" data-sys-asset-uid="bltcdcd68c291657334" alt="Persisted Color Example" style="display: block; margin: auto;">
</p><h2>Server Status</h2><p>In order to help people get a better idea of why Kibana may not be able to run, we now include a status page which can be accessed at any time, but also shows up automatically when there is a problem. For instance, if the Kibana server loses connectivity with Elasticsearch:

</p><h2>Filter using the legend</h2><p>Each visualization's legend is a useful way to see the groups that data falls into, but now it's also a great way to filter a visualization by one of those groups! Just click on any of the labels and a filter will be added to the filter bar at the top of the page. This works across an entire dashboard, but combine it with&nbsp;the <a href="https://www.elastic.co/blog/stick-with-it-pinned-filters">pinned filters</a> introduced in 4.1 and your&nbsp;filter now&nbsp;applies&nbsp;to all of&nbsp;Kibana.</p><h2>Olson timezone support</h2><p>One of the features we are excited about in Elasticsearch 2.0 is the enhanced timezone support in the <code>date_histogram</code> aggregation.&nbsp;Support for&nbsp;Olson timezone identifiers allows Elasticsearch to more accurately understand the UTC&nbsp;offset of every single event,&nbsp;even when&nbsp;a&nbsp;histogram covers a shift in UTC offset&nbsp;like the start of daylight savings time. This&nbsp;means that Kibana can better show when events&nbsp;happened&nbsp;in your local timezone.
</p><h2>Structural&nbsp;Improvements</h2><p>Kibana 4.2 also introduces several&nbsp;structural improvements&nbsp;including:</p><ul><li>Updated many of the libraries that Kibana uses</li><li>We've&nbsp;"shrink-wrapped"&nbsp;dependencies&nbsp;to&nbsp;guarantee consistent builds</li><li>Unit&nbsp;test suites now run&nbsp;in real and varied&nbsp;browsers;&nbsp;now results better reflect how Kibana runs in the wild</li></ul><p><br></p><p><strong>Thank you</strong> to all of the&nbsp;contributors who have helped us pull&nbsp;this beta&nbsp;together. Kibana 4.2 Beta 1: I Heard You Like Betas

			<p>A few months ago we released client libraries for PHP, Ruby, Python, and Perl and today we add another to the family, JavaScript! This new client runs in Node.js and modern browsers, and aims to solve the same problems that the others do:</p>
<ul>
<li>provide access to the entire Elasticsearch REST API</li>
<li>play nice with clusters</li>
<li>automatically discover nodes when desired</li>
<li>intelligently handle node failure</li>
<li>be easily extendable, so that you can really have it behave just the way you want</li>
</ul>
<p>If you didn&#x2019;t know that we are developing our own clients you should check out this <a title="Unleash the clients!  Ruby, Python, PHP, Perl" href="/blog/unleash-the-clients-ruby-python-php-perl/">post</a> from the first round of releases. In that post Clint explains why we decided to go down this road, as well as some of the goals of the project.</p>

<p>Just like our other clients, Elasticsearch.js is licensed under Apache 2.0 and hosted on <a href="https://github.com/elasticsearch/elasticsearch-js">Github</a>. Getting started with Elasticsearch.js is almost easier than getting started with Elasticsearch itself.</p>
<h2>Getting the Node.js module</h2>
<p>To install the module into an existing Node.js project use npm:</p>

<h2>Getting the browser client</h2>
<p>For a browser-based projects, builds for modern browsers are available <a title="Elasticsearch.js - Browser Builds" href="http://www.elasticsearch.org/guide/en/elasticsearch/client/javascript-api/current/about.html#_browser_builds">here</a>. Download one of the archives, and extract it. Inside you&#x2019;ll find three files, pick the one that best matches your environment:</p>
<ul>
<li>elasticsearch.jquery.js &#x2013; use this build if you are already using jQuery</li>
<li>elasticsearch.angular.js &#x2013; use this build in Angular projects</li>
<li>elasticsearch.js &#x2013; in all other cases, use this build</li>
</ul>
<p>Each of the library specific builds tie into the AJAX and Promise creation facilities provided by their respective libraries. This is an example of how Elasticsearch.js can be extended to provide a more opinionated approach when appropriate.</p>
<h2>Setting up the client</h2>
<p>Now you are ready to get busy! First thing you&#x2019;ll need to do is create an instance of <code>elasticsearch.Client</code>. Here are several examples of configuration parameters you can use when creating that instance. For a full list of configuration options see <a href="http://www.elasticsearch.org/guide/en/elasticsearch/client/javascript-api/current/configuration.html">the configuration docs</a>.</p>

<h2>Setting up the client in the browser</h2>
<p>The params accepted by the Client constructor are the same in the browser versions of the client, but how you access the Client constructor is different based on the build you are using. Below is an example of instantiating a client in each build.</p>

<h2>Entering Construction Zone</h2>
<p>This release of Elasticsearch.js should be considered beta. Please install it, try it out and give us feedback. What doesn&#x2019;t work? What is missing? What can we do better? We are excited to receive your issues and pull requests!</p>
<p>We will be actively working to squash bugs as soon as they pop-up, and plan to do a full performance audit (it&#x2019;s quick already, but we want to be certain that it&#x2019;s also efficient as possible). We are also interested in creating wrappers for this library which might include plugins for other ORM modules like Mongoose or Bookshelf, helpers for some of the more complex parts of the API.
