Added static and data-driven styling for all core properties, line-width, icon-size, fill-color, and line-color. The Phoenix office is in a private office in a shared co-working space. We have a big TV that faces out to the common area so that we can put fun stuff out there for public consumption. The Phoenix office is also in the direct take off and landing path of Sky Harbor Airport, so we made this simple workpad that shows what plane is flying overhead. We have scheduled kickoff meetings with Ingest team and plan to start the translation of Monitoring UI this Thursday.</p><h3>Alerting service</h3><p>Explored different design and implementation details. Analyzed existing or in progress services that could be used in the creation of an alerting system (i.e. task manager, notifications…). Summarized and reviewed feedback gathered from the engineering all hands.</p><h3>Canvas</h3><p>This week’s we’ve been knee deep in Cloud testing. We’ve found a few issues, but we’re knocking them off pretty quick. That said, Cloud testing doesn’t generate screenshots, but you know what does…</p><h4>Workpad Templates</h4><p>We were shooting for GA on this one, but it should ship at least one release earlier than that, if not two. Check out this totally sweet one pager of the flight data sample setRead Only Mode</p><img src="https://images.contentstack.io/v3/assets/bltefdd0b53724fa2ce/blt3d95f93fc8fb5fac/5c6c4812e9cab20962928d90/image3.png" data-sys-asset-uid="blt3d95f93fc8fb5fac" alt="image3.png"/><h3>Read Only Mode</h3><p>We needed read only mode for a couple reasons, not the least because we want to be able to show off Canvas on demo.elastic.co. This also gave us a chance to switch the view mode feature we’ve always had to persist on the workpad, allowing users with write access the ability to turn off editing by default.</p><img src="https://images.contentstack.io/v3/assets/bltefdd0b53724fa2ce/bltdb55167a4649a9ed/5c5837f365ace9e30b316503/image1.gif" data-sys-asset-uid="bltdb55167a4649a9ed" alt="image1.gif"/><br /><h3>Safe server-side execution</h3><p>The threading pull just needs one more lookover and it’s ready to go in. Canvas now maintains a single forked worker for CPU intensive server-side tasks. If a task takes too long, we kill the worker, fail the expression, and reboot the worker. This keeps potentially dicey expressions from impacting the performance of Kibana.</p><h4>Auto-complete has been merged</h4><p>This was the last feature we needed before FF and it made it in with time to spare. We even had time to slip in a handy toggle for turning it off</p><p><img src="https://images.contentstack.io/v3/assets/bltefdd0b53724fa2ce/blt2b13929c48b1045d/5c304cb0ff9c993a6eb5a404/image2.gif" data-sys-asset-uid="blt2b13929c48b1045d" alt="image2.gif"/></p><p>Those are the highlights. There’s more of course. We fixed a bunch of bugs and tuned up the way Canvas itself, and it’s plugins, load, so that it only starts up things like its socket when you’re actually inside of Canvas. There’s also a host of security (non-vulnerability) related fixes that went in, such as fixing how Canvas works with spaces. All in all, a solid week!</p><h3>Cross-stack enablement: Rollup Support</h3><p>We’re charging toward the finish line by wrapping up <a href="https://github.com/elastic/kibana/issues?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=is%3Aissue+is%3Aopen+rollups">testing</a> (thanks QA team and PM team) and code review (thanks Dev team). We’ve identified a pleasantly small number of blocking bugs which we are confident we can address in time for FF, and a number of UX improvements to address in a future release. We’ve also added telemetry support (<a href="https://github.com/elastic/kibana/pull/23668">#23668</a>).</p><h2>Team summaries</h2><h3>Design</h3><p>Last week we settled back into Sass conversion and started helping out teams as a lot of the major PRs started to land for 6.5. K7 conversion continues to chug along and 6.5 will be the first release where you’ll see some of the new layout creep its way in (master now has an option for the K7 header, and a new login screen just landed). We also finally got a <a href="https://github.com/chandlerprall/react-datepicker/pull/1">PR going for screen-reader support in React-datepicker</a>. Work on the new viz-builder continues as we’re prepping a demo for an upcoming Elasticon Tour. We managed to get the progress element to the point where we’ll be able to plug into it without writing any code! Progress elements are simply an svg with a single path and a single text node. We take care of drawing a 2nd matching path, and filling the text node with your label.</p><p>You can now also adjust the weight of the progress section of the bar independent of the weight of the background. And because this is Canvas, you can drive both the weight of the bar off dynamic data!</p><p>For example, in this contrived example, the progress line gets thicker as the completion goes up, but you could power the progress and line thickness from entirely different data sets if you’d like. The first run at this will be with the new visualization editor. To enable this, we’ll need to move the Canvas interpreter into the core of Kibana. We’re still working through the details, but we have a pull for it now!</p><h4 dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38;margin-top: 14pt;margin-bottom: 4pt;">The fine print</h4><p>But wait, there’s more! We’re also working on read-only mode to allow Canvas to work better on our demo sites, we fixed some bugs with plugin loading and IE support and made progress on getting Kibana visualizations into Canvas.</p><h3>Cross-stack enablement: Rollup Support</h3><p>With much of the core work completed, we’ve transitioned into the polish and bug-fixing phase of adding rollup support. The first roll out is here. We have officially added TypeScript support to the Kibana platform! What does that mean and why should you care?</p><h2>More Thoughtful JS Design</h2><p>TypeScript changes the way you think as a JavaScript developer. For example, more thoughtful planning goes into writing classes and functions, and in designing an object’s shape.</p><h2>You Can Create A Contract For The Data You Expect</h2><p>For those familiar with programming languages like Java or C#, interfaces are a nice contract (or agreement) on what data for certain objects should look like. For an author of a plugin, this can be valuable if there are changes to Kibana's core that changes the way the data looks, you get a descriptive error informing you as to where the contract was violated.</p><pre class="prettyprint">interface Address {

</pre><p>Should the zip code come back as a number instead of a string, you get a nice, descriptive error along the lines of:</p><p>src/hello.ts(2,5): error TS2322: Type 94040 is not assignable to type 'string'.</p><h2>Server Side Developers Feel At Home</h2><p>Ever want to create a Kibana plugin but find JavaScript a bit intimidating? TypeScript takes a definitive step toward blurring the lines between front-end and server side code by allowing for the static typing with many of the constructs you are already familiar with.</p><h2>Our TypeScript Tooling Is Flexible</h2><p>If a team prefers to use their own TypeScript tooling, they can continue doing so. Our implementation of support for TypeScript is flexible in that way. The <a href="https://github.com/elastic/kibana/pull/17706" target="_blank" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?hl=en&q=https://github.com/elastic/kibana/pull/17706&source=gmail&ust=1528469223635000&usg=AFQjCNECw9usW3XHtZ0lfDQlbqCrEsH4ug">logstash config API</a></span><span style="font-size: 16px;"><strong> and dashboard import API are not far behind.</strong></span></p><h3 dir="ltr">RBAC:</h3><p>&gt;The platform specific PRs that were separated out from RBAC Phase 1 have been merged, and we’re working on preparing the PR for RBAC Phase 1 after addressing the required filtering for finding without specifying a type.</p><h2>Design:</h2><p>&gt;EUI is now up to date with React 16.3.
