My First Movember

It’s November: quick, what’s the first thing you think of?

For me, the first things that come to mind are my friends and family that lose their leaves for the winter. Luckily, I’m just a piece of driftwood and don’t have to worry about things like that anymore!

But, there’s one thing I do have that they don’t: a killer ‘stache. And then I found out about Movember and decided to put it to use.

For those of you that don’t know, Movember is the charity movement that raises awareness (through the growth of killer mustaches!) and funds for men’s health issues – mainly prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health, and physical inactivity. And this year, I thought I’d get in on the fun.

While you can visit my Movember page and make a donation, I’m also hoping to raise awareness for men’s health issues by using … you guessed it: data!

Over the course of the next few weeks I’ll be parsing some health-related data, and along with my trusty cohorts Elasticsearch and Kibana, doing some analysis and blogging about the insights I uncover here. I, of course, will also be posting pics of my ‘stache growth as it progresses, so you can stay tuned for that here or on Twitter :)

To all of you Mo Bros and Mo Sistas: best of luck to you. And if you’re already participating or thinking about getting involved, you’re welcome to join my team.

Here’s to data and making a difference!
